"To speak the name of the dead is to make them live again,
it restores the breath of life to him who has vanished,"
funerary inscriptions.
Innumerable prayers exhort the pilgrim to perform the rites when passing

was a summoning, inviting the spirit to inhabit it. A ritual interaction,
with spells and offering formulas, to make it fit as a suitable abode for
the Ka of the King, the Ka of the God.
Offerings were essential, or gods, kings, etc., would not work for
Egypt! Neglect of these offerings could and would spell catastrophe. (It
was kinda like paying the gods, kings and their priests to work for Egypt)
Temple offerings, starting with the chief god, were taken on to successive
gods and goddesses, kings, etc., nobles, etc., mortuary temples, etc.,
ending with the living priests. the offerings were 'passed' around, so
that the whole community benefited, as priests were local residents who
took turns serving in local temples. Often these posts were hereditary.
Priests served for two months, then the next set would come in. |
